Portraits Through Still Life

2020-21

The history of humanity is a history of objects. We have given them a raison d’être. Nonetheless, we are living in the era of a loss of artefacts.

Smartphones –which are objects too– replace books, vinyl records, notebooks, cassettes, watches, photographs, maps… We place so much weight on their existence; we give them our memory and emotional stability. We lose our capacity to be amazed by the outside world; we lose the capacity to interact with things that we can touch. And the language…! We see through our phones.

This series of portraits through still life painting seeks to contemplate the object as the subject’s mirror. Intimate possessions represent personal symbols, archetypes, their value and resignification. The objects become my sitter.

Possessions are in constant change and reassessment. What are they doing there? What use does the owner bestow them? What is their story?
